At this point I feel like we should call it Jurassic Pratt.
When Jurassic Park 4 was first announced a few years back, it was a grown-worthy revelation. A series that has completely lost its footing and vision and has become just another CGI-laced action beast. Then I heard the premise for Jurassic World “The park is open”. I immediately got excited. Let’s just forget about The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 for a minute or two. They were both terrible films that still live in the shadow of their predecessor, one of the greatest films of the 1990s. For many of us JP was the first real sci-fi film of our generation. Now the park is open!
As I watched this trailer I kept seeing slight nods to Disney (there’s a monorail), and to the other JP films. That gateway opening is still one of the most memorable experiences of my movie watching life. This movie looks like it could be a little CGI heavy but that hopefully won’t make it less enjoyable. What made the first JP so great was that many of those dinosaurs were practical effects. The overuse of CGI is becoming a little bit of a problem, but I’m too excited for the dinosaurs to lose too much sleep over it.
Here’s what I got from the trailer: It looks like we’ll once again be saddled with two kids who are way in over their heads, and there’s an Indiana Jones type hero that saves the day in Chris Pratt. Good for you Chris Pratt you won our hearts as Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation and now you’re the newest leading man in Hollywood.
This trailer didn’t show much but the supporting cast looks fairly strong. Bryce Dallas Howard looks to be the head of Jurassic World. They have broken away from digging up bones to utilizing genetics to create new species of dinosaurs. This will obviously go terribly, terribly wrong. As Dr. Malcom says, “Life…uh…life…uh…finds..uh…a…way”. The cheerful demeanor of the park is quickly thrown into darkness as whatever this new monster is attacks the visitors. Sadly, we don’t get a good look at what this new genetic super-saur is (I’m hoping its a T-Rex + Triceratops), but it has a very distinct voice and call. It’s also seemingly HUGE. Like a modern day Ahab it’s Chris Pratt versus this thing (and he has both legs). He also gets a pack of raptors to help.
Yes, that’s Star-Lord riding into battle with a pack of raptors. Your fanfiction has come true: Dinos v.s Dinos, Chris Pratt on a motorcycle, and more Jurassic Park! Cannot wait for this one. I’ll just leave you with a quote from FBI agent Burt Macklin
