I am aware that everyone is getting tired of Nabisco coming out with new and crazy Oreo flavors. That being said…
I DON’T CARE. COOKIES ARE AWESOME. THERE ARE SO MANY VARIETIES OF SWEET SNACK GOODNESS AND THEY ARE ALL FOR ME.
Oreo has recently released two new flavors in a category that I like to call, “Desserts pretending to be other desserts.” We now have “Caramel Apple” and “Root Beer Float” Oreo cookies, and they are delightful. A far cry from the “Limeade” Oreo cookies that left most people disgusted, dismayed, and disappetized. (I maintain that if they had been marketed as “Key Lime Pie” flavored that the reaction would have been MUCH different, but they haven’t hired me to be part of their marketing team yet so I’m stuck writing this… for you… and you don’t even care.)
Let’s start with the “Root Beer Float” Oreo. What we have here is a cookie masquerading as an ice-cream-soda-drink-treat. While the flavor on this was pleasant, there was much more focus placed on the “Root Beer” aspect of the cookie, and not so much on the “Float.” The root beer flavor is a bit overpowering, and something as homogenous as vanilla isn’t going to stand up against it very well (even when playing with the artificial ingredients typically used by Nabisco such as vanillin and voodoo.) I’ll give these an overall score of 6/10. They’ve succeeded in making a nice tasty cookie, but it’s just fallen short of the spectacular something that it could have been.
The “Caramel Apple” Oreo tackles fake fruit flavor in my favorite way. The cream is neon green, and there is nothing natural about it. It’s basically the best thing ever. I’ve always liked caramel apples, but for some reason my caramel apple crave-o-meter has shot up like crazy this year. Anything caramel apple (or caramel OR apple) flavored is good in my book (unless it sucks… in which case it will also suck in my book, as it does out of my book. It will suck everywhere.) I GIVE THEM A TEN.
“Pumpkin Spice” Oreos are set to hit shelves on September 24th. I plan on buying all of them, so you better line up outside of Target* on the 23rd if you want to secure yourself a box.
*I’m specifically referring to the Target in Levittown, NY. If you plan on acquiring these at ANY other establishment, you should be fine.
